If you ever watch a movie in which the main character must transform himself into someone better in order to accomplish the mission at hand, you often see a bunch of scenes of that individual training strung together by some type of upbeat music while working towards that transformation. Who can forget the classic Rocky montage or even more recently Jaden Smith in The Karate Kid training with Jackie Chan to become a real martial artist. Unfortunately in real life, real transformation takes longer than that, and you don't get the benefit of having inspirational background music while you are doing it. The fact is, transformation takes place in our life from the time we are born regardless if its intentional or not. I realized this in January 2011, a week before my birthday, as I looked in the mirror at a man who was extremely over weight at 245 pounds and not even in his 30's (I was about to turn 28). My body was transforming alright, but not for the better. Every night I was struggling with heart burn so bad I considered going to the emergency room. I was constantly sick and taking antihistamines all the time along with pain killers for the headaches from constant congestion. At over 60lbs overweight, I was obese and transforming into one of the 20 million Americans that struggle with obesity related illnesses each year. After one particularly painful night with heart burn, I decided that I was sick and tired, of being sick and tired. I begin to educate myself, reaching whatever literature I could on health. I changed the way I ate, and began to exercise. I refused to settle for a simple diet, rather I decided that whatever I do would be a permanent change that would remain for the rest of my life. The result are 6 months in, I lost 65 pounds reaching my goal weight of 180, and I dropped 12 pant sizes going from 44 to 32. Since making these changes to my life, I have not had 1 instance of heart burn, nor have I had any sinus or congestion issues.
I've learned a lot on this journey and continuing to learn more. There are a lot of gimmicks and just straight misleading information as it pertains to obesity and what it takes to fight it. My goal is to speak from the point of view of a person who has been there, and to relay the accurate information that I have applied to my life to aid in my own transformation. Despite what the marketers will tell you, there are 3 key things needed to overcome the struggle with weight, Motivation, Education and Perseverance. I created this site to assist with the first 2, although the 3rd is going to have to come from you!
